Phil Jackson Coach of the Year?
Coach of the year?
Jackson dismissed any thoughts of winning the NBA's Coach of the Year award this season, saying the Lakers' success was hardly a surprise and the honor should go to someone whose team has been a surprise winner. Or an interesting team, at least.
"(Jeff) Van Gundy has been plugging for his brother (Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy) quite a bit, and he should do that," Jackson said. "Last year, Doc (Rivers) won it, of course. That was a runaway. That was Boston.
"I just heard the Miami-New Orleans game and Miami is making a case for their coach (Eric Spoelstra). Miami, that's a team that went from last to fourth or fifth in the East. So, there are supporting factors all the way around. Last year, we finished first in the West and we're going to do it again. I think it's kind of expected."
Elliott Teaford touches upon a good topic. Is Phil the Coach of the Year? What about Cleveland coach Mike Brown? It's a frustating topic to debate because of the complete lack of criteria. [LA Daily News]
